Russian-American singer Zola Jesus has just released a new single, and as always, it sure is interesting.
“Go (Blank Sea)” is the latest tune from her forthcoming album TAIGA. The track was inspired by the 'facelessness' of life in the big city. The artist questions, “How is it you can walk down the busiest street of a metropolis... yet feel completely isolated?”
Vast soundscapes and atmospheric beats, this track is compelling and exhilarating at every step. There's a soulful intimacy to the opening vocals, backed by subtle synths and thunderous beats. Once you move through the angelic verse, it's really takes off at the the chorus -- glistening, glorious vocal loops begin to build and harmonize over one another, and you can really feel the hustle and bustle that she's trying to emulate.
Towards the end, those gorgeous vocal rounds begin to really grow. Despite the fact that it's the same notes repeating, they seem to endlessly flourish. It's like some kind of sonic illusion – and a pretty delicious one at that.
