zach johnson – note the lower-case letters – hails from Minneapolis and formerly comprised half of blackbird, one of alternative hip hop's great "what if's" from the past decade. After a self-imposed exile, zach has reemerged with the innovative and funky "Fusion Dance."
The beat, composed by Moderator, complements zach's vocals, elastic with a hint of world weariness. "Fusion Dance" is sleek but not in a Drake-way. The song feels ephemeral and liberating, like a welcome return to form.
The writing in "Fusion Dance" is witty and detail-obsessed but also pretty naked. There's a timelessness to how zach etches his drawing, complete with lyrics calling out "Can't Tell Me Nothing." (The Kanye homage feels like a clue.)
zach's an enigmatic rapper, a five-tool talent like hip hop's Roy Hobbs. ("Fusion Dance" was written, engineered, mixed, and mastered by zach.) I challenge everyone reading this - yes, you - to keep him in your sights. His debut record, City Water, is due out in early 2018.
