A few years ago, I posted a track ("Hurt") by Swedish rapper Yung Lean, and while most thought it was some kind of joke, I actually like the kid. Over trippy, spaced out hip-hop beats, Lean talk-raps in his heavily accented English about video games, brand names, and being a Sad Boy.
Fast forward almost two years, and Lean has gone global, selling out shows throughout the UK and USA and delivering his well-received debut, Unknown Memory.
"Wanna Smoke" is just another sign of Lean's acceptance in the wider hip-hop community. Hooking up with Chief Keef lablemate Ballout, Lean delivers another icy banger that finds him not only rapping, but singing the hook, while Ballot adds a little taste of Chiraq to keep things hood.
Strange yet compelling, Yung Lean's career is only just beginning.
