Why do we like this?
Wow! This one caught me by surprise. I often find it takes musicians a few releases to find their sound, but Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Yuko Nishiyama has delivered a real winner on her first attempt.
As I'm sure you'll be able to tell from her name, Nishiyama is of Japanese heritage, having relocated from Tokyo to rural Australia as a child. She experienced a vast difference in culture and geography during that move, and this has had a large impact on how she's shaped her music.
Debut single "Heart of Daisies" is not quite folk, not quite pop, and it's got a really worldly feel to it -- but I'm sure you'll agree that grouping it into a genre doesn't matter when it's such an enjoyable listening experience. What's really impressive is the way the track shifts, a skill that many more experienced artists struggle with. The song is broken up into sections that flow into each other effortlessly, moving quickly from laid-back guitar and vocal arrangement to emotionally charged refrains that build quickly before shifting back again! Beautiful, dreamy stuff.
Nishiyama is as fresh as you get, having only started recording her work last year as a bedroom project. But if there's more of this to come, she's definitely marked herself as one to watch!
