Maryn Jones’ subdued solo project, Yowler, has become notorious for haunting melodies and perennial lyricism over its near fifteen year lifetime. Her latest single, “Where Is My Light?,” featuring her patented pastoral vocal lines, is certainly no exception. If anything, this track is a bit more rough around the edges than Yowler’s previous work, laced in a thick cloud of distorted guitar and dense drum lines.
Her previous release, a 2017 album entitled The Offer, took a somewhat minimalistic approach to production, leaving her vocals in the forefront while accompanied by rustic acoustic guitar and the odd lo-fi beat or synth track. This single provides a bit more support, while giving the intimacy of her lyrics a powerful bite. Jones’ melodic construction is a force of nature, coating layered ethereality in a sludgy finish.
“Where Is My Light?” is the latest in a batch of new singles signaling the release of Yowler’s upcoming album Black Dog In My Path.
