Sounds like:
Lana Del Rey
Why do we like this?
A male version of Lana Del Rey covering a Young Jeezy hit? Believe me, I thought it was a weird combination when it was sent to me, too! But, give this a listen and tell me it doesn't work for you -- I dare you.
Brooding vocalist Paul Conrad is the man responsible for this quirky mix of genres, which comes after the Sydney-based artist announced himself with a couple of smoldering singles during the second half of 2013 ("Heresy Baby" and "Thanks for Nothing"). With new originals on the way, he's produced his own version of the Atlanta rapper's 2005 hit (which featured Jay Z pre-Beyonce). While it's pretty funny to hear Conrad's dark, remorseful tones discussing things like "about the scrilla, call me a Ghostface Killa" or "switched hustles, been killin' em ever since," this is actually a super catchy cover.
Paul Conrad will have a new single out in the coming months, with further full releases scheduled for later in the year.
I'm off. You can catch me in the club, pimpin', doin' my thang.
