Why do we like this?

Funk is making a full-fledged revival. While many eyes and ears have been on Dam-Funk's dedication and Mayer Hawthorne's predilection to the genre, there is a community behind this. One of modern funk's brightest talents is XL Middleton.

Middleton has cut his teeth digging deep into the bridge between funk and hip-hop. After playing a supporting role in LA for a minute, he's ready to step out on his own with his debut album, Tap Water. The album's funk is terrifically enjoyable without pop concessions. 

By an auspicious blessing, Godfather of west coast funk music Egyptian Lover, salutes the young by taking XL's track “Psychic” back to the Jheri curl era with a remix. Just a warning, you may need a topless vehicle and overwhelming sunshine to enjoy.
