Melbourne songstress and producer Woodes set the bar pretty high earlier this year when she released her smoldering debut single “Daggers and Knives.” She’s now returned with “The Thaw,” a new slice of intricate electronica that is best described as a mesmerizing soundscape.
The track begins with a soft sample that rapidly expands into an irresistible opening verse. Woodes’ smoky and slinky vocals are like a magnet, pulling together the track’s collection of delicate guitar flourishes, weighty bass licks, and shuffling beats.
"I started with the idea of sheet of ice breaking and drifting apart, then trying to keep the fracture together but it melting in your hands in the process,” Woodes explains in a press release. “The Thaw simply was the time spent waiting for things to pass, once the ice melts there will be light and warmth. Visually I love the idea of being isolated in snow in the middle of winter, consumed in white, mirroring changes in the weather with changes in heart."
Allow yourself to be immersed in “The Thaw,” which – just like snow in the middle of winter – will envelope you in an otherworldly sonic wonderland. Listen to Woodes once, and you won't be able to resist returning, time and time again.
"The Thaw" was produced by Woodes and LANKS, with production by Simon Lam (half of Kllo). Woodes is currently collaborating with the likes of Kilter, Milwaukee Banks and Golden Vessel, so keep an eye out for her debut EP due for release in September. In the meantime, you can catch her on stage as she supports Dustin Tebbutt on his “First Light” national Australian tour in August. Tickets are available via dustintebbutt.com
