I'm digging the new Wooden Shjips album Back To Land. They've been on my radar as far as psychedelic space rock goes, but I haven't really listened to many of their records.
While in the past they've been known to have some less than stellar production (maybe going for that DIY vibe), this new album finds them finally putting out crisp studio sounds, with prevalent phaser-treated guitars throughout the album. But overall, I'm still not sure if this studio sound is the best for them -- it tends to reveal a little of the mystery to a band by being so direct.
"Back to Land" has a pretty straight-forward approach, but what makes this track is the ethereal vocals from Erik Johnson. The music behind him is similar to Wooden Shjips side-project Moon Duo, with emphasis on repetition of guitar licks and droning on for more than the average amount of time for a song.
If you're into this tune, then you'll enjoy the rest of the record.
