Wolf Alice’s 2021 release “Blue Weekend” has been featured on Indie Shuffle before, consistently praised for the record’s cinematic majesty and frontwoman Ellie Roswell’s stellar vocal performance. “Smile” is no exception.
Extraterrestrial keys elevate the track’s bombastic bass lines that are reinforced by crunchy guitars and punchy drums. Roswell’s vocals continue to shine, whether it be the sultry pseudo-rap of the verses to the wide stacked “aahs” found in the chorus.
“Smile” stands out due to its punkier instrumentation amongst a record of soft indie-rock that is littered with wispy guitars and swaying drum beats. The song’s lyrics are skillfully crafted, poignant yet accessible, affirming one's own identity against the assumptions of others.
In an interview with NME Roswell said “This is one of the songs we wrote thinking that we would play it live.” This is apparent throughout the song as it constantly invites you to sing along or at least bop your head a little.
