Sitting on a blue bus yesterday headed to town as the sun crept down over a foggy Cape Town vista coupled with the umpteenth listen of John Wizard's Lusaka by Night, I felt a punch of excitement for the prospect of going home, to Lusaka, next month. My eyes met with a young man reading a celestial-looking book with "God' in the title. We exchanged a sideways glance and sincere smile.
Fast forward 24 hours and I realize that the young man was Mohato Lekena, aka Wildebeats, whose Race Constructions EP I have just stumbled upon. Isn't life just degrees of separation and connection for which music provides a soundtrack?
The standout song on the seamless production is the title track "Race Construction," featuring fellow glowLDB artist Robin Brink (one third of Beatenberg).
Tracks like this will continue to nourish Cape Town's evergreen electronic music soundscape, and if self-actualization in a racially and culturally diverse city is something to be explored, what better medium to make use of than music. Sideways smiles and head bouncing all around.
