Brooklyn's Widowspeak wowed me with
their cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" back in July, and their recently released self-titled album lives up (and exceeds) all expectations.
For a band that's relatively new to the scene, they've accomplished quite a bit. According to
Pitchfork, their debut single "Harsh Realm" was was recorded after the band played only six shows. Pretty impressive!
My favorite track off the album is "Nightcrawlers," mostly because of the awesome opening guitar. The track (and Widowspeak's general style) reminds me of the soundtrack from
The Virgin Suicides. That's a compliment, because it's pretty much the best soundtrack ever. It featured a lot of songs from Heart, other singles from the 1970s, and some Air songs (including "Playground Love"). Combine it all together and you get the general feel of Widowspeak's "Nightcrawlers" -- in one word: dreamy.
