It hasn't been long since the Smith Westerns called it quits. Hey, nothing lasts forever. On the bright side, they left us with three killeralbums that we won'tsoon forget.
Their break-up also brought us a new band, Whitney. The seven-piece band consists of Max Kakacek and Julian Ehrlic from Smith Westerns,Ziyad Asrar of Touching Voids, and four other talented musicians. They proclaim themselves as "country-soul." After listening to this song for the 10th time tonight while writing this, I can completely agree with the creation of their new genre.
Their latest release (only their second thus far) is not too far removed from the classic surf pop style of Smith Westerns. Yet, "No Woman" is more reminiscent of a folk song gone to the sea, peppered with some soulful vocals in between.
It starts with old school Johnny Cash-like horns that turn into a dense and mellow strummed guitar. The chorus is perfectly done with an uplifting guitar riff rand a little dash of violin.
This track is awesome! I'm really digging Whitney. I hope they keep putting out similar vibes.
