Why do we like this?
"There's nothing particularly complex or erudite about These Four Walls. Instead, We Were Promised Jetpacks prefer to rely on things a little closer to hand and a little closer to home. While its emotions are often very raw and its lyrical disclosures seem uncomfortably close to the bone, the album always feels more exciting than it does lugubrious. These Four Walls is rousing, pop-like in its immediacy and pretty damn enjoyable. We should welcome such brave Scottish hearts." - music omh
This summer, my job has literally been to listen to music for NPR's All Songs Considered podcast. That being said, this may be the most addicting song I've heard all year. It caught my attention the minute the fast-paced, skittering post-punk drums kicked in, and I was completely hooked by the end of the songs emotive climax. If this doesn't get your heart pumping and/or throbbing, you may not have a pulse.
It's hard to say whether it's their youthful energy, the intense earnestness behind the music, or adam thompson's thick scottish accent, but there's something about this band that makes their music so compelling. It's not surprising that their first show was a battle of the bands competition they won while they were still in high school.
There are certainly flaws in this album (they can get a little repetitive and over-dramatic at times), but the spirit and sincerity behind even the cheesiest parts make it easy to forgive, especially considering how young they still are. Give them time to mature and master their songwriting, and we were promised jetpacks could very well become the pride and joy of scotland's indie rock scene.
