The long wait for Washed Out's full-length album is almost over! Out July 12, the Within and Without LP (via Sub Pop) is sure to ease your craving for effervescent synthpop music while urging you to take it to the bedroom (check out the cover art!).
Washed Out's mastermind Ernest Greene teamed up and recorded with Ben Allen, who co-produced Merriweather Post Pavillion, Halcyon Digest, and St. Elsewhere, among others.
The nine-song collection opens with "Eyes Be Closed." This track begins with pounding reverb, eventually settling into the standard shoegazey melodies paired with Greene's soft voice. Once the song gets going, you immediately get a taste of previous influences from Life of Leisure. If you've listened to Washed Out before, you can probably recall this static nostalgia of dusty, overdubbed cassette tapes and the warming vibe it gave you. I personally have grown extremely fond of Greene's vocals often being layered and reverberated to the point of sounding supernatural. Although his songs are known to stop suddenly, or the beats may sound warped or unsmooth, don't you find that this wrongness is somewhat endearing?
