Ladies and gentlemen of the strange world outside of Austin, Texas: Meet Walker Lukens, a charismatic musician who frequents our utopian backyard. The singer/songwriter can command a stage on his own, but seems to frequently travel with his “Side Arms,” also known as Zac Catanzaro, Mckenzie Griffin, Grant Himmler, and Kyle Vonderau.
Lukens has stomped on stages at SXSW, CMJ, and Untapped in the past, but I’m looking forward to seeing him this March to savor some of his newer sounds.
See, for the past few weeks the band has been teasing a promo for “Lifted,” which involves fleeting montages of coffee presses, green skin suits, and the makings of a fine salad. I don’t know what it is about the eerie, yet inviting, groans but I want more. It sounds good, folks. It sounds real good.
Walker Lukens’ catalogue of sounds all sound great. His 2013 album Devoted was unsurprisingly loved by NPR’s All Songs Considered, Billboard, Houston Chronicle, and our Austin American-Statesman. His stop-motion music video for “Dear Someone” was even scooped by Mashable. Now it’s our turn to share some love.
If you’re new to this SXSW storm and want to know what the locals recommend, it’s him. Walker Lukens has earned the respect of this city, through his colorful live performances showcasing his delicious tenor vocals. Walker Lukens and The Side Arms deserve your ears for as long as you can spare them.
If you are an Austinite and haven’t had a chance to catch this act around town, lie. Lie and say you have. Save some face. Good lord.
Catch them at Lamberts Downtown BBQ (401 West 2nd Street) on Thursday, March 17 at 11 p.m.
