As mentioned earlier this week, we've got two more singles off of Wait What's upcoming August 31 release, "This is Real Life". The first is a mashup of MGMT's "Electric Feel" and Nas' "Got Yourself a Gun". I was definitely familiar with MGMT's song beforehand, but this might be my first introduction to Nas. Conclusion? The MGMT probably helps his case. Overall, not the best lyricist I've heard, though it's no surprise considering I have a hard time swallowing mainstream rap. The mashup is sonically pleasing regardless. It might have even peeled away a layer or two of my resistance toward gangsta rap.
The second single is a mashup of DMX and Miike Snow. Again, I was familiar with the Miike Snow track, "Animal", but DMX's "Get At Me Dog" was a bit of a foreign track. It's a lot more mainstream than the Nas track used over MGMT, but once again the familiar enjoyment brought by the Miike Snow layer appears to counter my reluctance to listen to gangsta rap. I still can't help but laugh and say, "wait what?! Did DMX really just say that?!"
Wait What will be releasing the album with a show in SF on August 31. Purchases will be made on pay-as-you-wish basis, with all proceeds going to Dave Eggers' youth writing non-profit, 826 Valencia. Pretty sweet deal, right?
