Going in to 2017, I had a strong idea of what I wanted to hear out of music and what I didn't want to hear anymore. Replicated melodies and template driven dance and pop tracks quit cutting it after a while. Hearing artists take risks and do something outside of the common mold that folks seem to love and follow is much more exciting for me.
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter vōx's new single "I Was Born" flawlessly executes a minimalistic, avant-garde approach to pop music, using her voice as the only necessary instrument to tell a story driven from the soul. With some help from a vocoder and a microphone, lyrics like "I think I died this week; the earth slipped away," stop you in your tracks, and lock your attention in from beginning to end.
