It has been several years since we last heard from Bon Iver's band Volcano Choir, but their new album Repave is around the corner, and they're sounding stronger than ever.
The album has an unexpected focus to it, balancing the layers of its acoustic and electric instruments flawlessly. The song billows out and winds down at all the right places; the juxtaposition of each instrument is divine. Unfurled and unimpeded, they come forward with tales of the heart, placing their tactile emotions in our hands.
In my opinion, this album is much tighter than the first one. Justin Vernon's voice comes through strong and gusty, resonating more with his Bon Iver self than the scattered vocal layers of the first album, Unmap. Saturated with innovation, Repave is a happy marriage between the creators and their ideas...and isn't always nice to see relationships work out?
