VOKES, aka Mike Harris, has received a ton of love on Indie Shuffle over these past few months. His alt-soul fusion is irresistible, and track after track he displays an impressive consistency.
He also just released his debut EP, Fractalism. It's a six-track journey through R&B influenced falsettos, brilliant electro key flourishes, and funktronica guitars. Like the name of the EP suggests, his sound is structured around a solid foundation, allowing him to break from it and wander down different sonic roads.
The theme of the EP is centered around relationships, and altogether the six songs tell a story of people falling together and apart. "Cravings" is no exception. It fits right in with the other five tracks to create a cohesive introduction to VOKES.
In Harris's own words:
"[Fractalism] is a made up word that came from some concepts behind fractal artwork. When I first saw illustrations or graphics in that style, to me it looked like shapes were constantly breaking apart and creating more patterns infinitely. Something about that caught my eye and seemed to sync with the stories and productions I was beginning to create. I had written a large body of songs before I started VOKES but this was the first time I discovered my sound and what seemed identifiable to me as a artist that would become “VOKES". The Fractalism EP is based around a personal narrative of relationships that kept falling apart and restarting consistently."
