On paper, this looks like some kind of horrible joke, but if we know anything about Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, it's that he can turn even the most outrageous idea into a masterpiece. Released as a gift for the New Year, this remix of the slow-burning "Step" keeps Koenig's original chorus but trades his verses for stanzas from rappers Danny Brown, Heems (formerly of Das Racist), and Depsot.
All three MCs differing styles gel well over the pleasant indie strains of the original production, and while nobody wants to play favorites, it's Brown's verse that really pulls you in -- his maniacal vocals and somewhat subdued lyrical content give new life to this tune.
It shouldn't work, but it does, leaving me hopeful this won't be Koeing's last foray into the world of hip-hop.
