Twin Shadow continues his eclectic Under The CVRS series with a driving take on the U2 classic "With Or Without You." Like his previous covers, George Lewis Jr. has taken an iconic, well-known track, stripped it to the bare bones, and infused it with his own brand of experimental electronica.
Lewis Jr. conveys the anguish of a troubled relationship almost as good as Bono, with the increased percussion and grinding synths taking the song into darker territory. The altered vocals towards the end are almost mechanical like, only emphasizing the struggles depicted in the lyrics.
As he has down throughout this series of covers, Twin Shadow isn't reinventing the wheel, but he is giving listeners interesting interpretations of modern classics. Until he decides to release new material, I for one am enjoying this collection of tunes.
