Sounds like:
Emily Haines,
The Weeknd,
Banks
Why do we like this?
I have a real soft spot for male/female vocal combinations, so it's little wonder L.A. based trio U.G.L.Y. (Under Greatness Lies You), caught my attention. Comprised of 2009 Miss Teen USA and American Idol contestant Stormi Henley (vocals/keys/synths), former Chris Brown dancer and R&B singer Mijo (vocals/triggers/electronic drums), and acclaimed guitarist Braxton Oliat (vocals/guitar/electronic drums/production) who has toured with everyone from Ashley Simpson to 30 Seconds To Mars, U.G.L.Y. are an eclectic mixture of styles and influences that shows on their debut EP DMT.
DMT is an excellent release, with its influence ranging from 90s electronica to modern indie, with first single, also called, "DMT," a clear winner. Over a murky synth line, soft percussion and melodic guitar, all three members share vocal duties -- the trio's harmonies are absolutely stunning. There's a real modern R&B feel to this one -- a hybrid of Drake, The Weeknd and Ladytron -- and Henley's vocals remind me of Metric frontwoman Emily Haines.
Do yourself a favor and give their EP a listen here.
