Why do we like this?
It's old, it's new, it's up, it's down... what IS it exactly? It's Twin Sister... and they're slowly creeping up on you with their 6-track EP, Color Your Life (and no, they're not going anywhere). Twin Sister, a 5-piece hailing from Long Island, NY, is fresh, ethereal, entrancing, and in my opinion, timelessly addictive. One second you'll be hearing a vintage retro loop, the next a fresh new approach to a style that's been attempted and failed by so many bands. Twin Sister? They effortlessly get it, which probably makes you think, "Why didn't I think of that?!" This band surely is a slap to the forehead. Where have they been all this time?
Andrea Estella's haunting vocals are undeniably unique; slightly icy, ever-flowing through a cool breeze of refreshing delicacy (which is probably why she takes the lead, though the female-male harmonies are also delightful). The bass seems to be a definitive staple throughout this whole album; rarely does it shy away in the background like many a bass are known to do, and thank goodness for that! Then there's the guitar -- clear-cut and vivid. You know exactly where it's coming from but have no idea where it's going, which is the perfect recipe to make you want to listen to the album in its entirety. The keyboards are equally as hypnotizing; they play a major role in the way that Twin Sister is able to entrance their listeners so well.
The drums are what tie all of the elements together; sometimes the beat makes me want to two-step (don't judge) and sometimes I want to disco (ok, you can judge). Either way, you never know what beat you're going to get, and I'm sure you'll be pleased with whatever the track happens to throw you. To me, it's all infinitely pleasing.
I can only hope that one day I'll somehow be able to witness an impromptu jam session involving this band in order to attempt to figure out how they go about their creative process. I highly doubt I'd be disappointed.
Their first EP, Vampires With Dreaming Kids (2008), is also a fantastic listen... certainly don't sleep on it! Just succumb to all of the elements and let Twin Sister embrace your inner being.
