Why do we like this?
As "Home & Consonance" begins, Chris Ward, aka Tropics, laments with equal parts lust, desperation and exhaustion. The Southampton-based multi-instrumentalist soon reverts the mood with a battering of drums. It reminds me of the moments when we fall comfortably into our depression, almost thriving in the heightened creative state the depth of emotion brings.
The track is unique in its ability to remain simple, yet fragile, capturing the trill of anxiety. Every part rests upon the other, a glass house of last-chance-hope that you're afraid you'll shatter even by listening. It glows and glimmers the way the moon does right before the dawn, right before we have to come to terms with the day.
The title track comes from the Home & Consonance EP, dropping via Five Easy Pieces (home of fLako and Citizen) on April 22, 2013. For updates, follow Tropics on Facebook or SoundCloud.
