Trevor Hall holds a special place in my heart (and ears). My sister and I can't go one car ride without playing his music, and it has been that way since high school. A new song from him always fills me with happiness, even more so when the song is as satisfactory as this one.
I always appreciate when musicians go outside the box and add some variety into every new release. On this song in particular, Hall keeps flexing his acoustic muscle while also speaking some of the words. It was a bit of a rap influence where I least expected it. Honestly, at first I wasn't expecting it to be good, but i was shocked at how well it flowed.
I’m not sure if folk-rap is a genre but if it's not, Hall is on his way to becoming one of its pioneers. “My Own” is proof that Hall’s voice is always addictive and calming, meaning I’ll never get sick of it.
