Why do we like this?
We haven't showcased this guy for over a year, but please join me in welcoming Travi$ Scott back to Indie Shuffle. I just got through his well-hyped, recently released Owl Pharoah, and it's a banger. The Houston native makes a strong case for increased hip-hop notoriety, as he and a handful of contributors provide incredible production, hard beats, solid rapping, and some really wavy melodies throughout this project. It all adds up to be a time-worthy listen that offers a variety of mood enhancers.
Wet your beak with the showcased song "Dance On The Moon," a feel-good track featuring Brooklyn's Theophilus London and Houston's Paul Wall. Owl Pharoah listeners will quickly find themselves "turning up," as it's hard not to throw the arms around and bop to and fro to tracks like "Upper Echelon," "Blocka la Flame," and "Quintana," which feature the likes of 2 Chainz, T.I., and Wale.
Switch up the tempo a bit with "Hell Of A Night" which has some serious Ye' influence (not just talking song title), sounding like an 808s and Heartbreak/Dark Twisted Fantasy love child. Tune your ear and you'll notice the Fleet Foxes sample in there as well. "Oliver James?" Damn that's tight.
"Drive" is an ode to H-town, which opens with some OG samples from the likes of Lil' Flip, before leading into an electro-soul track featuring James Fauntleroy. Here we're told to "hit the weed and jus drive." I'm sure a lot of bopping-heads are heeding this advice, and bumping other stand-out tracks such as "MIA" and "Naked."
Travi$ Scott has molded his influences and skills together to create some delicious ear candy in Owl Pharaoh. He obviously has support in the industry, which we can see by the big time features and partnerships with G.O.O.D. Music and Grand Hustle. My most humble blogger perspective says look out for this dude, because Owl Pharaoh is most likely a surface scratch of what's to come from Mr. Scott in the future.
