Why do we like this?
Good pop music is hard to come by these days; I find it tiring delving through the masses to find something which isn't vacuous and completely boring. That said, there is some talent out there to cure the downfall of pop music.
Young Sydney duo Toucan are part of a new breed of pop musicians. They make music with brains and ingenuity, something which is sorely missing from a lot of today's mainstream music. Able to call on some considerable musical talents after both completing their studies at Sydney's Conservatorium of Music (where they met), they were recently decorated as Triple J's "Unearthed Feature Artist" -- a good indication of their immense potential.
Petite but powerful Jess Pollard has a voice to rival anyone, while Shea Duncan runs the show from behind his keyboard. Their new EP, Brave New World, is due for release on November 18. Produced by Duncan at his home, the five tracks are impossible not to enjoy. This is the sort of music which you want getting stuck in your head.
Title track "Brave New World" starts things off. Upbeat, but still maintaining a drifty vibe, it's a good representation of the Toucan way -- keeping things simple, but doing them really well. "On the Run" shows off Pollard's incredible voice, which draws serious comparisons to Adele or Florence Welch. "Age of Consequence" is perhaps the favorite, a laid-back and effortlessly cool jaunt, layered with reverb and rolling keys. The lack of any guitar on the EP is an interesting feature. Rather than detracting from the music, it's a nice change with the guys looking for other ways to complete their sound.
These youngsters have a bright future in front of them, and hopefully more "smart-pop" is produced as a result of their impending success.
