Why do we like this?

It’s been good to hear from TOPS lately. The Canadian dream-pop group have been busy exciting their fans with new singles from their upcoming album, Sugar at the Gate.

The most recent of these is “Further,” a soft, hazy tune made with honest lyrics about a heartbreak. The track is driven by instrumentation that is both minimalist and magnetic, illuminated by vocalist Jane Penny’s shape-shifting and always dynamic voice.

TOPS has gone through many changes since the release of their last album, Picture You Standing, in 2014, including the addition of 2 new musicians, a breakup between band members, and a move to Los Angeles. A long way from their start in Montreal’s niche indie/DIY scene, it will be interesting to see if these changes play into the sounds on their new record.

Sugar at the Gate will be released on June 2, through Arbutus Records.
