For years, I've had this question in my mind: what is it about Icelandic music? Is it something in their water? Are they all just born with an otherworldly musical sixth sense?
Tonik Ensemble is Anton Kaldal Ágústsson. His new single "Imprints" is deep, combining fragile synths with live instruments in the most ethereal, stunning manner.
Toying with octaves, harmonies, and a myriad tones, each phrase has something new to give. I feel like the vocals -- haunting and mysterious -- are used as another layer rather than a melody.
Subtle strings and flutes dance with the synths; I adore the intricacy of those live layers. They're not just employed on loops here; there are violin plucks and long, ambient crescendos, flute trills, and harmonics scattered throughout. As a classical flautist myself, this is my kind of tune.
I definitely fell into a bit of a trance listening to this with headphones on. It's the kind of tune I'm happy to listen to two or three times in a row.
Tonik Ensemble's full album Snapshots comes out next week, but you can stream it right here right now.
