Why do we like this?

This gorgeous, subtle track is the first single off the debut album, At Weddings, by musician Sarah Beth Tomberlin. Like many musicians today, she wasn't sure her songs would ever leave her bedroom. But I am so (so) glad that "Self Help" and the others are joining us out here in the wider world.

"Self Help" is influenced by living in southern Illinois as a young adult, singing hymns in church, and a reverence for music itself. Themes of love and death pervade the song, along with the repetitive acoustic guitar and electronic sighs that accompany Tomberlin's simple and intimate vocals.

Tomberlin worked with Owen Pallett to create this gorgeous gem of a tune, in addition to the full album coming out August 10th on Saddle Creek Records. That's how I found her many months ago: Pallett shared her self-released album At Weddings on Bandcamp and I fell in love at first listen. But now she's pulled it offline, and is teasing us with this single, its music video, and several new tunes on the upcoming album.

"My number one goal with my music is for honesty and transparency that helps other people find ways to exist," she says.
