I don't often stray from my (self-enforced) Australian-only review policy, but New Zealand's Tom Lark is worth a policy review. The terrible earthquakes that hit his home town of Christchurch last year destroyed his practice space and studio, and so he recorded and self-produced his entire debut EP from his bedroom. Armed with a "defective" laptop and a bunch of instruments, the result is one of the best New Zealand releases I've heard in some time.
He's currently touring in Australia to celebrate the release of the EP's second single "Give You All My Lovin." One of the EP's more upbeat tracks, it's got all the attributes of a great "bedroom" song "“ plenty of fuzzed-out guitars, reverbed vocals, and clattering percussion.
Tom Lark is an intriguing talent, able to change moods and tones swiftly while continuing the overall flow of the record. Currently working on a Christmas EP, you can stream his EP on his Bandcamp or SoundCloud.
