Why do we like this?
Sydney four-piece The Upskirts has been a hardworking, honest local band since their inception back in 2010, gigging consistently and releasing two EPs. While that's all well and good, bands needs to be consistently improving themselves and refining their sound if they plan to go anywhere, and a lot end up folding or go backwards in the music they're creating. With a new EP on its way, this band has just released a brand new single, and from the sounds of it, they're not going to be folding anytime soon.
"Mind's a Burden" is clearly The Upskirts' most accomplished work to date. A churning, psych-heavy single, it possesses an abundance of rawness in its makeup, from the shadowy reverb effects to the rugged, almost shouted vocals. A song about "friction in a relationship, spurred on by distance and uncertainty," they've done an incredible job at building a track which describes these emotions with all its musical twists and turns. The brilliance is completed in the track's epic finale, an aural explosion of musical brilliance.
The Upskirts look like a band who has really found themselves musically, which bodes well for the release of their upcoming third EP in the coming months.
