The Townhouses (Leigh Hannah) is certainly no stranger around these parts. His most recent album, Diaspora, was one of our favorite Australian releases of 2012, and as a testament to his superb songwriting ability, the change in direction he seems to have taken since its release has found favor amongst fans, cementing himself as one of the country's most exciting artists.
Today we're really excited to be premiering his new cassette release, "Magpie" (which is lifted from his forthcoming third LP). The first release on his own label, Healthy Tapes, "Magpie" is a slow-burning beauty, which puts Hannah's lilting baritone at the forefront, supported by a bed of simple drum machines, soft synths, and a bass riff that will get stuck in your head for days.
The two B-sides of the cassingle (which you can listen to here) represent the two different sides of The Townhouses' music -- "Hopscotch" as a meditation on the storytelling powers of tuned percussion, and a one-mic recording of "I Found A Reason," a tribute to songwriting greats The Velvet Underground and Cat Power.
The Townhouses will be launching the cassingle release of "Magpie" and his new cassette-only label Healthy Tapes in Melbourne on March 5. Look out for the next release on Healthy Tapes in April, and his forthcoming LP in May. Exciting times.
