Archy Marshall is the man. Whether he's working as King Krule, Zoo Kid, DJ JD Sports, Edgar The Beatmaker, Edgar The Breathtaker, or any of his other creative aliases, his beautifully murky beats and guttural vocals consistently have a way of inducing an oddly pleasurable, glazed over sedation. In his latest work they do the same, this time under the name The Return of Pimp Shrimp on a new track titled "FEEL SAFE 88 (just say no)."
The 22-year-old Marshall explained the new project in a Facebook post, writing: "Another age another name for the stomps." As we've become accustomed to, it's a sound where Dilla-inspired beats lurk in jazzy back alleys, creating a shadowy soundscape that's inherently calm and comforting despite its slightly twisted DNA.
My preferred environment for King Krule consumption is with the lights off, candles burning, and windows open to allow midnight moonlight and a cool breeze to set the mood. This is just a friendly recommendation, but I suggest you do the same for the excellent arrival of The Return of Pimp Shrimp.
