The Phoenix Foundation has been my favorite New Zealand band for a while, and that surely has something to do with their ability to avoid formula with a sort of endearing nonchalance.
This a band that can deliver psychedelic introspection and tongue-in-cheek playfulness in equal measure, without falling wholly into any particular genre. For those unfamiliar, their new EP, Tom’s Lunch, is a good demonstration of this skill.
The EP’s lead single "Bob Lennon John Dylan" is a fun, high-energy track that sounds like it could be an extended try-out session for new drummer Chris O'Connor (previous drummer Rich Singleton left amicably after twelve years to focus on his environmental work). It was produced by David Fridmann, whose credits include work with MGMT, The Flaming Lips, and Tame Impala.
Tom’s Lunch was released on May 16 in New Zealand, and the group is set to kick off a seven-date release tour around the country.
