Why do we like this?
Maybe it's because they're my age (barely out of high school), or maybe it's because they simply all-around rock, but The Orwells are a obsession I cannot shake. Reminiscent of both Iggy Pop and Sex Pistols, this Chicago quintet is already starting to spread like wildfire. Performing at both SXSW and Lollapalooza this year, they've proved that although they're rookies, they can shake up a crowd just as much as any other band.
After seeing them for the second time in some random building without a stage, it's clear they are all about the music and their fans. With a garage-punk sound and snarly vocals, they've got a vibe that can get a crowd rowdy and jumping. While shredding guitars, tearing up both bass and drums, and Mario Cuomo's voice howling just as loud, they strike confidently and with high levels of energy.
Maybe it's the "double double double double double" that's fun to sing along to, or perhaps it's the bass line that you can't help nodding your head to, but there's something about "The Righteous One" that I just love. And although most of their lyrics are littered with immature notions, The Orwells are refreshing to the ears, reassuring us that this next generation will continue to keep the punk-rock style alive -- raw, gritty, and untamed.
