Sounds like:
Thom Yorke,
Atoms For Peace,
Flying Lotus
Why do we like this?
A couple days back, Sub Pop put a 15 second sample up on their SoundCloud page with the title "Guess The Artist." It was a very clever gimmick, with the majority guessing it was Atoms For Peace.
Flash forward a day or two, and Sub Pop unveil the single to be the first new song from The Notwist in...forever. And that's really, really exciting!
The Notwist started in Germany as a heavy metal band way back in 1989, but over the course of their 8 releases, their sound evolved dramatically. By the time they reached 2002's Neon Golden they sounded a whole lot more like The Postal Service than they did In Flames. And that's when I first fell in love with their music.
Then came 2008's The Devil, You + Me. I think I listened to this album at least a hundred times. It was dark, haunting, and somewhat hard to grasp; as a hardcore fan of The Notwist, I found that to be an absolutely perfect formula.
"Close To The Glass" is the first taste of the band's upcoming album by the same name, due for release February 25th. It hints at a body of work that will push boundaries, an approach already well-established by the band.
If you're as keen as I am, you can pre-order it here.
