It's hard to catch my attention by means of email submission, but The New Tarot's premiere request for "Reign" managed to do the trick. The track doesn't fall under "standard" as far as reviews that cross my desk, which may perhaps explain why I'm here right now, sharing this track with you.
The New Tarot's "Reign" sees a delicate balance of female vocals over intricate instrumentals. The result is a rich and engrossing trip-hop single that ends before you even realize it has started (at under 3 minutes in length, it is on the shorter side of most singles these days).
Of interest to note is that the band's sophomore EP contains six songs, each accompanied by a tarot card designed and drawn by Karen Walker, the sister of Monika Walker, the band's lead singer. Aside from doing the art, Karen is a keyboardist and does supporting vocals.
When speaking of "Reign," Monika references the "undertaking a lot of stress and personal sacrifice to ensure the success of [a monarch's] kingdom." Indeed, listening to the song, a lot of that passion and struggle becomes quite visceral.
If you're into it, be sure to follow the band on SoundCloud for more music.
