Why do we like this?
Sydney's The Holidays were one of the first bands I ever reviewed on Indie Shuffle; their 2010 Post Paradise album was one of my favorites of that year. I actually came across one of their earlier tracks recently and wondered what they were up to, and then their latest single popped up in my inbox just a few days later.
Over the past couple of years, the guys have been putting together a second LP, written and recorded around the world in studios and apartments in Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, London, and Paris. With the album not set for release until next year, we'll have to make do with its first single, "Voices Drifting."
Their new track showcases a very new direction for the band, who was known for their tropically-charged indie pop music -- a staple on the summer festival circuit down under. Drawn out and even dark in its makeup, "Voices Drifting" is a much more mature sound from the (now) three-piece. Fuzzy and atmospheric, Simon Jones' yearning vocals complete what is almost a throwback to mid-90s rock, something I would never have thought these guys would have produced.
This is a really exciting return for The Holidays; the time they've taken to produce their new music is clearly paying dividends. Welcome back, guys.
