Sydney's The Harry Heart Chrysalis has been making waves around Sydney, opening for bands like The Delta Riggs and Glass Towers. “Vex” is their latest single, and it's based on a true story. It's reportedly about a “beautiful yet morbid and miserable girl looking to betray her boyfriend.” Yikes.
Luckily, the song isn't as morbid as the protagonist. “Vex” has a driving bass, a basic beat, and a catchy melody that's topped with a really unique vocal tone. There's clear influences of alt-pop and blues at play here, making this the perfect example of a song that is neither groundbreaking nor boring I've-heard-it-all-before stuff.
I feel like this is the kind of tune that'll become something really powerful when played live. There's a guitar in there that's aching for a screaming, extended solo, and a repetitively thumping bass that should no doubt send vibrations throughout a room.
A raw, fairly stripped back track with an intensely dark back story, "Vex" shows a world of potential, I'm really interested to see what's to come for the Harry Heart Chrysalis.
Harry and his five-piece touring band will be hitting the road later this month in support of the single.
