As far as favorite artists go, the Chain Gang of 1974 has claimed a permanent spot in my top 5. Kamtin Mohager is a master of emotional storytelling. His unforgettable tales dance and strain over synths to create some of the most wonderful noises in the world.
It would be wrong to accuse Mohager of being quiet since his last Chain Gang release in 2014. The LA artist teamed up with Swing Hero’s Marshall Gallagher for the project Teenage Wrist (launched in 2015). And his social media studio updates, late night album spinning escapades, leave my phone aglow at all hours. But finally, after months of patient waiting, we have our ears on his latest release.
“I Still Wonder” stirs all the inquisitive wonder and troubling scars that are permanently folded into our youthful hearts. This single is moody, troubled, but still inspires you to move. Mohager told Substream Magazine the song focuses on infidelity, guilt, and that heart aching “What if?”
This single was co-written and co-produced by another beloved artist, The Naked and Famous’ Thom Powers. (The most social media/music FOMO possible is seeing snaps and sneak peeks of these two acts hanging out together.) The Chain Gang will be supporting all the kiwis on their upcoming tour this fall. I hope I’m not the first to tell you it will be the best money you’ve ever spent.
