The Big Moon has proven themselves to be quite an eclectic band on their new EP, The Road. You can hear bits of a post-Favourite Worst Nightmare Arctic Monkeys on one track, the frenetic spark of The Libertines surging through another, and there's a catchy surf rock number that could soundtrack the summer. On "Cupid" -- which also appears on The Road -- the British group have managed to channel those varying tones into their latest release.
In a way, the single feels like a composite of the other four songs on the EP. It has the laid-back shuffles of crystalline chords heard on "The Road," tolls of leaden riffs from "Eureka Moment," the upbeat energy of "Nothing Without You," and the heavy distortion that powers "Sucker."
"Cupid" is a track in its own right, though, and in no way feels like a mess of derivatives. The Big Moon hones their musical range with grace, resulting in their most focused, anthemic effort yet.
