Why do we like this?
The Belligerents were one of those bands that, at the young and impressionable age of 17, I probably would have followed to the ends of the earth. Armed with a fake ID, an obsessive love for live music, and a wildly unrealistic crush on their guitarist, I'm fairly certain I didn't miss a single one of their shows over the course of about 18 months. Bless.
Three years late, and while I still look about 17, I like to think that my taste and understanding of what makes a good band -- besides attractive band members -- has matured somewhat. So, too, have The Belligerents grown up in some respect, with astonishing and refreshing clarity in their writing and lyrical content and truly immaculate production, all of which have evolved and been fine-tuned over the last few years.
Their latest single, "Ghost VS," shows a darker side to the Brisbane indie-dance outfit, with frontman Lewis Stephenson's haunting vocals enveloped in a delicious electronic track that builds perfectly and necessitates an immediate replay. Or ten.
