Why do we like this?
Sometimes you have to throw away what you've been working on and start from scratch. And that is exactly what The Baptist Generals of Denton Texas did before putting together their sophomore LP, Jackleg Devotional To The Heart. The album is slated to be released via Sub Pop records on May 21, 2013, but you can get a sneak peak of the first track released off the album here.

"Broken Glass" starts off with a lightly strummed acoustic guitar, overlapped by vibraphone and feedback-ladened electric guitar. Layered together, it builds a haunting backdrop for lead singer Chris Flemmons' nasally yet honest vocals.

Similar to previous album No Silver/No Gold (where Flemmons completely opened up about the experience of his father's passing), he talks about brokenness in his life.  Apparently for this go round, Flemmons has put together a "love" album, as stated on the band's Sub Pop artist page, but love for The Baptist Generals must go hand-in-hand with heartbreak.

Be on the lookout for Jackleg Devotion Of The Heart and check out The Baptist Generals on tour this summer with The Mountain Goats. Until then go get yourself a free download of "Broken Glass," off Sub Pop's SoundCloud page.
