In honor of the 20th Anniversary of their landmark album, Since I Left You, The Avalanches have released a deluxe quadruple album reissue on June 4th, 2021, via Astralwerks.
The first two discs consist of the original album, with the second two discs comprised of remixes from both past and present. Remixes included on the album come from artists such as MF DOOM, Leon Vynehall, Black Dice, Carl Craig, Stereolab, and Prince Paul (who remixed the classic title track, released on April 8th.) The repackaged album will be released digitally and in 4xLP and 2xCD versions.
While I’m usually a bit of a purist, especially when it comes to renowned, iconic bands, Prince Paul does the remix of “Since I Left You” some serious justice.
He takes what is already a timeless, jam-worthy classic, and fits it out with some trip-hop majesty that culminates in a phantasmagoria of brass and bass. He injects new life into a track that didn’t necessarily need it but welcomes it all the same. Ultimately, he makes “Since I Left You” more accessible for the younger generation.
Those of us who grew up with The Avalanches will always appreciate the old-school feel of their alternative lo-fi hip hop beats, but can still seriously enjoy the color and texture added to the remix. Prince Paul did our boys good.
