It's a very strange feeling to type "The Avalanches" into a new track review - I don't think any one act, especially from Australia, has been so desperately waited on with increasing feverishness for sixteen years. After countless rumours and hints and moments of false hope, The Avalanches have returned with "Frankie Sinatra," their very first piece since 2000's Since I Left You.
A carnival-themed plethora of samples - with a Sound Of Music bridge, and verses from Danny Brown and the legendary MF DOOM all come together for a deeply satisfying first taste of their new album, which we now know to be called Wildflower. Out on July 8, other featured guests across its 21 tracks will include Toro Y Moi, Father John Misty and Camp Lo among others.
The video details the absolute worst kind of bad psychedelic trip; it's an incredible watch, and the perfect accompaniment to the twisted and brilliant new song.
Welcome back, Avalanches, It's good to see you again.
