Why do we like this?
The Apache Relay's second album, American Nomad, is an excellent effort from a musically skilled group with evident appreciation for the rich, layered brand of American rock 'n' roll that pays homage to the road. Their words may evoke Springsteen, but their sound reminds me of bands like Dr. Dog and Blitzen Trapper. The album similarly evokes a tapestry of instruments and vocals, but the overall effect is as familiar and down home as Bruce would wish.
The strongest tracks are the ones when the band really ups the energy; their ballads are catchy but less emotionally arresting. "Lost Kid" starts off slow and crescendos to a swelling, catchy chorus, and the title track "American Nomad" gets you dancing off the bat. I'm particularly loving "Power Hungry Animals" -- it gives us a taste of folky, raspy vocals, killer harmonies, and a kind of slow-driving power that's undeniable.
Music of the road in subject, to be certain, and music for the road in sound. Rev your engines and turn it up!
