You might not know the name Terrace Martin but you surely have heard him play his horn. A product of the generations-long jazz tradition of South Los Angeles, including landmarks like Fifth Street Dicks and The World Stage, Martin is part of a generation of black and brown musicians connecting the threads between jazz, soul and modern hip-hop.
His saxophone is all over Kendrick's last two projects and his ear was a crucial part in helping develop the young rap giant's particular palette of colors he's mesmerized the world with. That's the power of knowing where you come from so you can know where you're going.
He's not just a confidant, consultant and muse--Martin is an artist in his own right. His latest album, Velvet Portraits, will be out soon on Philly's Ropeadope Records. The project will pay tribute to the past with ample room for throwback jams like "Patiently Waiting," a slow, deep burn that swings with confidence even before Uncle Chucc's commanding voice touches the mic.
