Pete and the Pirates are no more, long live Teleman. And Teleman hasrung the changes.
With their debut albumBreakfastfeatured as "album of the day" on Radio 6 in June, it's clear that this new direction is favorable with many. "Lady Low" is the dreamiest track you will hear today, and is more than likely a track you'll want to return to.
Thomas Sanders' voice feels like it should have been here all along, and everything certainly appears to be perfectly in place. The sonic depth in the song is what really drags you in; with a repetitive riff/melody, and 80s synths providing a sleepy backdrop, it's a song that lets you slump in relaxation and bathe in the noise.
Furthermore, it is a track that builds, with the synths receding to the background but providing many layers for you to marvel at. Despite the fact that the chord sequence never changes (and for a long while neither does the backing), it won't grow tiresome, and the timbral combination is just gorgeous. The retro feel of the backing allows it to become a real nostalgia-fest, although Sanders' voice allows you to stay in the moment.
Progressing to an echo-fueled sax solo, and later returning to the memorable vocal melody, it's hard not to smile as "Lady Low" drifts off into an assumed sunset. Sanders' sings "Tell me, when will the spell take effect?" In a sense, the song puts you under its own spell, with its repetitive nature becoming hypnotic, and the soaring melody entrancing.
